Eurobarometer Representation Dataset

The Eurobarometer Representation Dataset is a dataset I created with Robert Rohrschneider that harmonizes and merges variables from five decades of Eurobarometer surveys, from Eurobarometer 2 (1974) through Eurobarometer 105.2 (2026) — 113 waves and roughly 2.5 million respondents in a single file. Rather than treating each wave as a stand-alone survey with its own question numbering, the dataset assigns a single, consistent variable name to each substantive question and tracks where that question does (or does not) appear across the full series of surveys, making it possible to study change over time in EU public opinion using one longitudinally consistent file. Substantive coverage includes attitudes toward EU institutions and the European Parliament, support for EU membership and the single currency, national and European identity, political knowledge of the EU, trust in EU and national institutions, economic perceptions during the financial crisis, attitudes toward immigration, and a standard battery of demographic measures. The dataset also carries a standardized composite measure of EU support, built so that respondents from waves that asked different combinations of the underlying questions can be placed on one common scale. The accompanying codebook documents, for each variable, its coding scheme, exact question wording, and Eurobarometer source wave, along with the composite measure and the limits on comparing it over time.

Mid-Atlantic European Union Simulation Survey Dataset

The Mid-Atlantic European Union Simulation brings undergraduates from a dozen or more institutions to Washington, D.C. each year to spend three days simulating European Union decision-making, each student playing a named European political figure. This dataset, assembled with John Scherpereel of James Madison University, is the student survey that has run alongside it: 924 responses collected between 2015 and 2020 at 13 institutions, of which 544 are matched into 272 pre/post pairs, organized around knowledge of the European Union, engagement with politics, self-assessed skills, and empathy toward the figure each student played. We have used these data in two published studies, one drawing on the 2015 simulation and one following four consecutive years from 2017, both asking what participation adds to what a semester course already delivers. This release is built directly from the original survey exports rather than from the analysis files behind either paper, so it retains the unmatched respondents, keeps every original coding alongside each correction, and codes institutions rather than naming them.

Multi-Level Political Knowledge Data

Most surveys of political knowledge ask what Americans know about Washington. This dataset, built with Todd Makse of Florida International University, asks what they know about the place they actually live. Across two waves — April 2022 and June 2023 — 3,171 respondents in twenty American cities answered a battery of knowledge questions written specifically for their own city: who the mayor is, who the police chief is, which office sets the property tax rate, how long a mayoral term runs. Parallel batteries cover national and state politics, so knowledge at the three levels can be compared within the same respondent rather than across different samples. The twenty cities were selected to be collectively representative of medium-sized and large American cities, and each record carries survey weights, a standard set of demographics, media-consumption measures, and neighborhood characteristics drawn from the American Community Survey for the respondent’s ZIP code tabulation area.
